EBEC Kaunas is the first round of an annual international engineering competition EBEC (European BEST Engineering Competition), which is held in Lithuania for the 12th time. The competition consists of 2 categories: Team Design and Case Study. The winners of both categories proceed further and will meet with other local winners in their respective categories in the respective second (regional/national) round. The winners of regional round will participate in EBEC Final and will meet the best European students of technology. EBEC gives students the opportunity to use their theoretical knowledge gained during the University, by being challenged to solve interdisciplinary tasks. In this way we make sure that EBEC is a project that targets all engineering students, no matter what their field of study is, and is able to offer them a good quality content that can help them develop themselves in an international environment. You can register a four people team, or a one person who would be appointed to a team.
More about tasksContestants are given a task to build or compose a device/machine, which will perform certain task within limited time with certain amount of limited material. Afterwards contestants present their projects in front of the jury and try to demonstrate that their device meets all the requirements. Tasks are given on the first day of the event and must be fulfilled within 2 days. The tasks are getting more and more interesting and creative every year. There was a year when contestants had to make a flying ball who would throw itself in a basketball hoop. In 2013, old printers were transformed into wind power plants. In 2014, students had to find a way to weigh a driving car. In 2015, students were making chronometers, which must have had the most correct timing possible, and in 2016, music players were transformed into smart locks and keys for those locks.
Contestants should provide a solution to real problem of either technical nature or relating to the management. Solving this task requires analytical skills as well as gathering, filtering and analyzing information. Students propose their abstract hypothetical solutions of the given problem which they have to demonstrate in front of the jury. Tasks are given and must be solved on the first day of event. On the second day contestant give presentation on their solution for task.
There have been various Case Study tasks, which challenged students soft skills and checked their knowledge. In 2014, “NFQ” gave a task to find the most effective ways to fight corruption. Meanwhile, “LitGrid” asked to make a model of a best airline possible. “MARS Lithuania” invited students to their factory and asked to explore production process. In 2015, teams had to reinvent bicycle, construct power lines and automate manual production. In 2016, three different companies provided Case Study tasks. “Aedilis” gave a task to create an evaluation system of factory performance. “TeleSoftas” asked to find cheap ways to improve mobile connection in rural areas. “MARS Lithuania” gave a task to automate their factory working process.
